What are Dutch “oranje vlaggetjes”?
Oranje vlaggetjes are the orange-and-Dutch-flag bunting strips that drape Dutch streets, balconies, café windows, and storefronts during Koningsdag (April 27) and major Oranje (national-team) football tournaments. The orange color comes from the House of Orange-Nassau, and Dutch streets get visibly orange in the days leading up to Koningsdag: HEMA, Action, Blokker, and supermarket chains stock thousands of vlaggetjes-strands and disposable orange decorations. Some neighbourhoods (Den Haag’s Oranjerie, Utrecht’s Oranje-buurt) compete for the most-decorated street. Vlaggetjes-supplies routinely run out the week before April 27.
