What is the difference between “bloesje” and “overhemd” in Dutch?
In Dutch, bloesje and overhemd look like they could mean the same thing, but they don’t. Bloesje (also blouse) is reserved for women’s blouses: typically a softer fabric, a feminine cut, often without a stiff collar. Overhemd covers the standard men’s button-down shirt: starched, collared, made for tucking into trousers. Where English uses one word (“shirt”) with optional gender modifiers, Dutch makes the distinction lexical. Mixing them up (calling a man’s overhemd a bloesje) reads as unintentionally diminutive.
