What does “mag ik” mean in Dutch?
The polite way to ask for something in Dutch is mag ik…? — “may I…?” It comes from mogen, “to be allowed to,” and it’s softer and warmer than ik wil (I want). A child asking for ice cream says Mag ik een ijsje? — “May I have an ice cream?” You don’t even need a separate verb for “have”: mag ik + the thing is enough.
The whole clip runs on it: “Mama, mag ik een ijsje?” and then “Mag ik er ook hagelslag op?” (May I have chocolate sprinkles on it too?). Mogen is the politeness verb behind many everyday requests: mag ik even langs? (may I get past?), mag ik je iets vragen? (may I ask you something?). It also means “to be allowed”: dat mag niet (that’s not allowed), je mag gaan (you may go). For a softer touch, add alsjeblieft (please): mag ik een ijsje, alsjeblieft?
