Why do Argentinians call popcorn “pororó”?
Popcorn in Spanish has more names than almost any other food. In Rioplatense Spanish (Argentina and Uruguay), it’s pororó, borrowed from the Guaraní word for the sound of corn popping. Cross a border and the word changes completely: palomitas in Spain and Mexico, cabritas in Chile, canchita in Peru, cotufas in Venezuela, crispetas or maíz pira in Colombia.
When this Argentine clip says “compro un pororó mediano,” a Spaniard might pause for a second. Pororó pinpoints a Spanish speaker geographically in a single syllable. The same vocabulary fragmentation hits other foods: fresa/frutilla, jugo/zumo, aguacate/palta. Snack words are where Spanish dialect splits are most visible.
