What does “chaukhat” mean in Hindi?
चौखट (chaukhat) is the Hindi word for the wooden frame and threshold of a house door. Beyond the literal meaning, chaukhat carries enormous cultural weight in Hindi family drama: a bride is welcomed across it, a son is disowned at it, a daughter who leaves angrily is told “इस घर की चौखट कभी मत लांघना” (“never cross this house’s threshold again”). The line is a stock Bollywood disowning move, dating back to the 1950s family films of Bimal Roy and continuing through every prime-time saas-bahu serial.
This clip delivers the line straight: “इस घर की चौखट कभी नहीं लांगनी है तुम्हें. याद रखना” (“you must never cross the threshold of this house. Remember that”). The threshold becomes the boundary of family belonging.
