What does “ماليش في” mean in Egyptian Arabic?
Egyptians turn something down with ماليش في (malīsh fī): ماليش في الحاجات دي means “I’m not into that stuff.” It is مالي (“I have not”) plus ش, the Egyptian negative, plus في (“in”). It isn’t rude. It says the thing isn’t your taste, and it works for food, hobbies, sports and music, whatever is offered.
In this scene Shawqi hands chips round the family (خد شيبسي, “take some chips”), and one person brushes it off with بس أنا ماليش في البتاع ده (“it’s just not my thing”). The same frame works with a person: ماليش في فلان is “I’m not a fan of so-and-so.” The everyday counterpart is بحب (baḥebb), “I like.”
