What does “يغار” (yighār) mean in Arabic?

Arabic draws a sharp line between two feelings English blurs. حسد (hasad) is malicious envy — wanting a blessing stripped from someone else. يغار / غيرة (yighār / ghayra) is jealousy — coveting what someone else has, with no wish to harm them. The construction يغار من means “to be jealous of” a person: the father here sees his toddler’s chocolate hoard and يغار من ابنه — he is jealous of his son.

The verb comes from the root غ-ي-ر (gh-y-r), the same root as غيور (a jealous person) and غيرة (jealousy as a noun). In the clip, the mother gives the boy chocolate as a reward for doing push-ups. The father watches the stash grow, gets jealous — الأب بدأ يغير — and eventually tells his wife he can do push-ups too and wants chocolate as a prize.
