What does “طاحت” (tahat) mean in colloquial Arabic?
In colloquial Arabic, طاحت (tahat) is the go-to word for something falling or dropping — heard constantly in everyday speech but absent from textbooks, which favour وقعت (waqaʕat) or سقطت (saqatat) instead. The طاح / طاحت pair covers everything from a doll tumbling into a pool to a government collapsing, in one sharp syllable that feels natural across Gulf and Levantine dialects alike.
The root is ط و ح (ṭ-w-ḥ), and the verb conjugates simply: طاح (taah) for masculine past, طاحت (tahat) for feminine past, and بيطيح (byitiih) in the present. In the clip, a brother and sister are playing challenges — the sister secretly lets her doll fall into the pool (دميه اخته طاحت داخل الحوض مباشره) so her little brother can win. That single line is a perfect classroom example: subject, verb, destination. The idiomatic extension طاح من عيني (“he fell from my eye”) means someone has disappointed you — the same root, now mapping physical fall onto a loss of trust.
