What is “bakhur” in Arabian and Yemeni culture?
البخور (al-bakhūr) is the perfumed incense at the heart of Yemeni and Gulf hospitality. The base is oud, agarwood resin from infected aquilaria trees, blended with rose oil, ambergris, sandalwood, and saffron, then shaped into chips or paste. Hosts place a few pieces on hot charcoal in a small mabkhara burner and pass it around so guests can perfume their hair, beards, and clothing in the smoke before they leave.
