What does “شارس” (shāres) mean in Egyptian Arabic?
شارس (shāres) means fierce or vicious — most naturally said of a dangerous dog or an aggressive person. A solo traveler in this clip sticks a handwritten note on her hotel-room door reading كلب شارس جوه — “there’s a vicious dog inside.” There is no dog, but the bluff is real Egyptian street-smarts: one well-chosen adjective, instant deterrent. The root ش-ر-س (sh-r-s) carries the same edge in Modern Standard Arabic as شرس (sharis).
The abstract noun شراسة (sharāsa) means “ferocity” and appears in formal contexts: شراسة القتال (“the ferocity of the fighting”). شارس itself stretches beyond animals — كان شارس في المفاوضات (“he was fierce in the negotiations”) or طفل شارس (“a wild, unruly child”). Egyptians also use it with a hint of affection or admiration: هي شارسة شوية — “she’s a bit fierce” — about someone with a strong, no-nonsense personality.
