What does “وحش” mean in Egyptian Arabic?
In Egyptian Arabic, وحش (wiḥish) means bad or ugly — the everyday opposite of حلو (ḥelw), “nice.” MSA learners hit a wall here: in standard Arabic the same word means beast or monster, which is a completely different register. Egyptians use it freely: الجو وحش (“the weather is awful”), شكله وحش (“he looks bad”). One word, two languages, two unrelated meanings.
In the clip, the girl deliberately dresses بشكل وحش — in an ugly, off-putting way — so that the boy her mother is setting her up with will be repelled by her.
