What does “مخربط” (mukharbat) mean in Levantine Arabic?
مخربط (mukharbat) means something — or someone — is completely scrambled and mixed up. It comes from the verb خربط (kharbaT), a four-letter colloquial root meaning “to throw into disorder.” Unlike the formal Arabic words for confusion, مخربط is the word Levantine speakers actually use in the moment: for a jumbled bill, a garbled story, or a plan that’s fallen apart. Textbook Arabic won’t give you this one.
In the clip, a restaurant customer gets hit with the wrong food, the wrong juice, the wrong ice cream — all belonging to the person at the table behind them. When the bill arrives with the same error, the customer finally says: أنت مخربط الحساب عند الأخ وراه — “you’ve got the bill all mixed up with the brother behind us.” That single line shows مخربط doing exactly what it does best: naming the moment when everything has been thoroughly scrambled. The adjective inflects for gender — مخربطة (mukharbaTa) for feminine — and the verb يخربط (yikharbat) is just as useful: هادا بخربطني (“that confuses me”).
