Ordering Lunch And Meeting A Friend
A1 English luyện nghe · Tiếng Anh · Phù hợp với người mới bắt đầu
What does “Here you are” mean when paying?
Here you are is what English speakers say when they hand something to someone — money, food, a ticket. It is not a question, and it is not about where you are. In this café scene, the customer pays for a salad and water and says “Here you are”; the seller simply answers “Thank you.” The phrase means: “I am giving this to you now.”
Its twin is here you go — same meaning, a little more casual, very common in shops and cafés. Here you are sounds slightly more polite and personal. You will also hear there you go when someone finishes doing something for you. All three are tiny phrases that textbooks often skip, yet they appear in almost every buying-and-selling conversation.
