What does “shelter in place” mean in English?
When there is danger nearby — a shooting, a chemical spill, a manhunt — officials sometimes order people to “shelter in place.” It means: stay where you are right now, go inside, lock the door, and wait. You are not looking for another building. The place you are already in becomes your shelter. That is the key: “in place” means stay in your current spot, not move to a different one.
In the clip, a reporter at the White House describes what happened when gunshots were heard outside. The Secret Service told journalists to run into the Press Briefing Room “and shelter in place.” The reporters went inside and stayed there until police said it was safe — that is exactly what the phrase means.
