What does “breadwinner” mean in English?
Breadwinner looks like “someone who wins bread,” but the word “win” here is very old. It once meant to work hard and earn something. “Bread” means the basics — food, rent, bills. So a breadwinner is the person whose income keeps the family going. You hear it in everyday conversation and in news. What makes the word interesting: it used to almost always describe a man. That has changed a lot.
