Why do Southerners say “wouldn’t let nobody” instead of “wouldn’t let anyone”?
In Southern American English, the double negative is a real grammatical pattern, not an error. Wouldn’t let nobody means “wouldn’t let anyone.” The negative agreement runs across the whole sentence: “I wouldn’t let nobody cut in trees, I don’t see nothing wrong with that.” In standard written English those would be single negatives. In spoken Southern, they’re standard.
This clip is a junkyard tour with light Elvis nostalgia, exactly the kind of speech where double negatives feel natural. Many world languages (French, Spanish, Russian) use negative agreement the same way. Southern English keeps the pattern alive in spoken American, even though textbook grammar prefers the single-negative version.
