What does “staruszek” mean in Polish?
Staruszek is what Polish does when it wants to be kind about age. It comes from stary (“old”) through staruch — a blunt “old man” — and the diminutive -ek softens it into “dear old fellow.” Poles use it for grandfathers on park benches and, as in this clip, for an elderly dog nobody else wants: mam nadzieję, że uratujemy jakiegoś staruszka, “I hope we’ll rescue some poor old boy.”
The feminine is staruszka, “little old lady,” and the pair appear constantly in news and conversation with the same warmth. Compare the contempt in the clip’s opening line — obrzydliwe te psy, stare i śmierdzące, “disgusting dogs, old and smelly” — with the daughter’s choice of words; the diminutive does the moral work. Two more from the scene: rasowy (“pedigree,” from rasa, “breed”), and serduszko, the affectionate diminutive of serce in masz dobre serduszko, “you’ve got a good heart.”
