What’s the difference between “তুই” and “তুমি” in Bengali?

Bengali has three words for “you”: আপনি for strangers and elders, তুমি for friends and peers, and তুই for the tightest bonds — children, siblings, very close friends. In this clip, a father orders for his daughter using তুই-forms (“তুই যা অর্ডার করবি,” “whatever you order”) while she answers him with তুমি (“তুমি কি খাবে?” “what will you eat?”). The mismatch isn’t rudeness — তুই flows downward with affection, তুমি flows upward with respect, and both can be loving at once.

The asymmetry runs through the whole clip: the father’s every line to his daughter uses তুই-conjugated verbs (করছিস, “are you doing”; গেছিস, “have you become”; বলিস, “will you tell”), while she never once addresses him with তুই. Swap the direction — a stranger using তুই to an elder, say — and it reads as contempt, not warmth. That’s the trap for learners: তুই isn’t simply “informal,” it’s specifically for people you outrank in closeness, which is why a grandparent can use it freely with a grandchild but never the other way around.
