What does “ফাঁদে পড়া” mean in Bengali?
ফাঁদ is a trap or snare, and পড়া means “to fall” — so ফাঁদে পড়া literally means “to fall into a trap”: a hunter’s snare, or being tricked and scammed. In this fable a wolf tries to eat a sleeping dog, who talks his way out by promising to fatten up first. The wolf falls for it, and the story’s moral spells the idiom out directly: “অভিজ্ঞরা আর ফাঁদে পড়ে না” — “the experienced don’t fall into traps again.”
Bengali builds more idioms the same way, pairing ফাঁদ with different verbs: ফাঁদ পাতা is “to set a trap,” and কথার ফাঁদ — literally “a trap of words” — describes a loaded question or verbal trick designed to catch someone out. This fable is a variant of a very old wolf-and-dog tale, and its punchline (the dog laughing safely from the rooftop the next day, warning the wolf off a second attempt) is what makes ফাঁদে পড়ে না memorable: the experienced don’t get caught twice.
