What does “morro” mean in Rio de Janeiro?

morro
Rio de Janeiro geography word
“hill” — and, in Rio, the hillside community built on it

Morro is a hill: smaller than a montanha, bigger than a bump. In Rio de Janeiro it carries a second, inseparable meaning — the favela built up its slopes. Subir o morro is going up into the community; lá no morro means up there, inside it. Rio’s first favela grew on the Morro da Providência in the 1890s, and that pattern went on to shape the whole city.

The geography drives the vocabulary: Cariocas set o morro against o asfalto, the paved flatland of the formal city — shorthand for two Rios, not merely two altitudes. The word travels well beyond that, appearing in place names all over Brazil and in postcard peaks like Morro Dois Irmãos. Here it is the detail that fixes the setting: no fim da rua, lá atrás, tem morro.
