Why is the VW Beetle called “Fusca” in Brazil?
Fusca is the Volkswagen Beetle, and in Brazil it is less a model name than a national mascot. The usual account traces the nickname to German pronunciation: Volkswagen and its abbreviation VW both open with an F sound in German, and Brazilian mouths reshaped that through fulque and fulca into Fusca. The nickname stuck so hard that Volkswagen eventually adopted it as the car’s official Brazilian name.
Portugal calls the same car a Carocha — “beetle” — so a Brazilian and a Portuguese speaker can discuss the identical vehicle without sharing a word for it. Elsewhere it is Escarabajo in Spanish, Vocho in Mexico, Beetle in English. Brazilians shrink theirs affectionately to fusquinha, and the colour usually comes after the noun, as in the clip: um Fusca vermelho, never um vermelho Fusca.
