What is “gelado” in Portuguese: ice cream or cold?

At a beach in Portugal you eat a gelado. In Brazil the same ice cream is a sorvete. Gelado literally means “frozen,” from gelar (“to freeze”). In Brazil, gelado is normally just an adjective, as in cerveja gelada (ice-cold beer), and sorvete is the ordinary word for ice cream.

This short story has a few more Portugal words. Afonso drinks sumo (Brazil: suco, juice), and a sandes is a sandwich (Brazil: sanduíche). The teacher asks ele come uma sandes ou gelado? (“does he eat a sandwich or ice cream?”), and the answer is gelado.
