What does “ninhada” mean in Portuguese?
In Portuguese, ninhada is the word for a litter: all the baby animals a mother delivers in one go — a litter of puppies, kittens, or piglets. It’s normally an animal word, not one for human babies, which is exactly why it lands as a joke when an overwhelmed expectant dad, hearing he’s having triplets, blurts out that he’s about to have uma ninhada and needs a vet, not an obstetrician.
The word is built from ninho (“nest,” from Latin nidus) plus the collective ending -ada, so a ninhada is literally “what comes out of the nest” — the whole brood at once. That -ada suffix is a handy pattern for groups: boiada (herd of cattle), molecada (a bunch of kids), mosquitada (a swarm of mosquitoes). In the clip the panic peaks on the pun: “Obstetra? Eu preciso de veterinário. Eu vou ter uma ninhada” — by swapping the human obstetrician for a vet, he reframes his three babies as an animal litter.
