What does “vai apanhar” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?
Apanhar normally just means “to catch” or “to pick up” — apanhar um ônibus is “to catch a bus.” But said as a warning to a misbehaving kid, você vai apanhar flips it into “you’re going to get it” — a spanking, a scolding, some kind of trouble. It’s one of the most common half-joking threats Brazilian parents use, somewhere between serious and playful depending on tone.
In the clip, a dad chases his toddler after a broken remote control, laughing te achei (“found you”) before the mock-threat você vai apanhar — the whole scene is playful, not a real punishment. Related: apanhar de alguém (“to get beaten by someone,” e.g. in a fight or a lopsided match) and levar uma surra (a near-synonym, “to take a beating”), both riffing on the same “catch = get hit” logic.
