💡 Bạn có biết?

What does “ficar sem argumento” mean in Portuguese?

ficar sem argumento
Brazilian "stumped" phrase
“to be left speechless,” to run out of arguments/comebacks

Ficar sem argumento means to be left with nothing left to say — you had a case, and now you don’t. In a comedy skit, a teacher tells a kid she can’t possibly teach every subject alone; he shoots back a sharp comeback and, as the narrator puts it, ela ficou sem argumento — “she was left speechless,” beaten at her own logic. It’s the go-to phrase for losing a debate on the spot.

Argumento does double duty in Portuguese — it’s a debate “argument,” but in film and TV it’s also the written treatment of a story’s plot, so ficar sem argumento plays on literally “running out of story” too, part of why the phrase lands as clever rather than blunt. You’ll also hear the flipped version, ele não tem argumento (“he’s got nothing”), used for a weak excuse or a losing case.
