What does “dar grau” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?
In Brazil, dar grau means to pop a wheelie: lift the front wheel and ride balanced on the back one. Grau literally means “degree,” the angle measurement — so the image is of the machine tilting up to an angle. You’ll hear it for motorbikes, bicycles, and here even heavy equipment, always with the same daredevil, show-off energy.
The slang is flexible: besides dar grau you’ll hear sair no grau (to take off doing a wheelie) and ir embora dando grau (to leave popping one), exactly as the clip stacks them — “o cara descarrega a areia e sai no grau... vira dando grau e vai embora dando grau.” The speaker jokes that a skid-steer operator who can’t do radical stunts shouldn’t be hired, then admits “nem de bicicleta eu consigo dar grau” (“I can’t even do one on a bike”). Internationally the move is called “wheeling” or stunt riding; in Brazil it’s simply o grau. Note that doing it on public roads is a serious traffic offense under Article 244 of the Brazilian traffic code.
