What does “terreiro” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?
In Brazil, a terreiro is the sacred house — the place of worship and community — of the Afro-Brazilian religions Umbanda and Candomblé, the consecrated compound where worshippers honor the orixás with drumming, dance, and offerings. The word started out plain: from terra (“earth”) plus -eiro, a terreiro was just an open yard or cleared patch of ground. That sense of sacred ground carried over to name the whole house of worship.
A terreiro typically centers on the barracão, the main hall where public ceremonies happen, with separate rooms for initiates and shrines for individual orixás. Some date back well over a century.
