When do you use “brincar” instead of “jogar” in Portuguese?
English has one verb for “play”; Portuguese has three. Brincar is unstructured play — kids messing about, a cat with a ball, an adult teasing. Games with rules take jogar (jogar futebol, jogar xadrez), and instruments take tocar (tocar violão). Mixing them is the giveaway: jogar piano sounds as odd as “gaming the piano.”
Brincar also covers joking: tô brincando is “I’m kidding,” and brincadeira is both a children’s game and a prank — foi só brincadeira, “it was only a joke.” Brincar com fogo means exactly what it does in English. One more twist: a brinco is an earring, not a toy; the toy is a brinquedo.
