What do “salva” and “salvo” mean in Portuguese?
In Portuguese, an adjective changes its ending to match the gender of the noun it describes. Salvo means “safe,” but you only say it for a masculine noun — for a feminine one it becomes salva. Same word, same meaning, different last letter. That -o/-a swap is the single most reliable pattern in the language: get the noun’s gender right and the adjective follows automatically.
The family is playing a minefield guessing game, tapping squares and calling each one safe. Because essa (“this one,” pointing at a feminine casa/square) is feminine, they say tá salva — “it’s safe.” When they switch to a masculine reference, it flips to tá salvo. Hearing the two forms back to back over the same game makes the rule concrete: ela está salva (she’s safe), ele está salvo (he’s safe), sã e salva (safe and sound). The pattern carries across nearly every Portuguese adjective — bonito/bonita, cansado/cansada — so the ending always points back to the noun’s gender.
