What does “glitter” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?
In Brazil, glitter is the English word borrowed straight into Portuguese for the sparkle that defines Carnaval. The older native term is purpurina, and the two are largely used interchangeably for Carnaval sparkle (glitter being the trendier, more common word today). During Carnaval almost everyone in a street bloco wears it — and famously, it sticks to everything and turns up for weeks afterward.
The clip plays on exactly that: a doctor gravely “diagnoses” a patient with glitter, warning it’s para sempre (“forever”), não faz discriminação de raça, cor, idade (“doesn’t discriminate by race, colour, or age”), and keeps coming back vira e mexe (“every now and then”) in stressful moments. The joke only lands because every Brazilian knows the real thing: Carnaval glitter genuinely is o brilho que gruda — “the sparkle that sticks” — surviving showers and reappearing for days. Note the pronunciation stays English-flavoured; you’ll also see the spelled-out form glíter in dictionaries.
