What does “de graça” mean in Portuguese?
On its own, graça means grace, charm, or even a joke — que graça! is “how funny!” But de graça flips it to something purely practical: “for free, at no cost.” So a free meal isn’t graceful; it just doesn’t cost you anything. It’s a classic false-friend trap, since the noun looks like English “grace” but the everyday phrase has nothing to do with it.
The link isn’t accidental: graça descends from Latin grātia — the same root behind English “grace” and “gratis” — where the sense was “a thing freely given.” Brazilians stretch it with the verb sair: a refeição inteira sai de graça, literally “the whole meal comes out free.” You’ll also hear trabalhar de graça (“work for free”) and the wry não é de graça (“it’s not for nothing / there’s a catch”). Watch for its opposite, sem graça, which means “dull” or “embarrassed,” not “expensive.”
