What does “pamonha” mean in Brazilian Portuguese?
Pamonha is a sweet (sometimes savoury) paste of grated fresh corn, steamed inside the corn husk itself, then unwrapped and eaten warm. It’s the signature treat of the June São João / Festa Junina parties, sharing the table with arroz doce, canjica, and popcorn. The name is generally traced to Old Tupi for “sticky” — and one taste of that dense, gooey corn explains exactly why.
São João is one of Brazil’s biggest celebrations, and corn is its star ingredient — so naming the festival foods (pamonha, arroz doce, pipoca) is half the fun, as the clip’s narrator does while agonising over what to eat. Watch for the slang twist, too: call a person pamonha and you’ve called them a softie or pushover — a fool too mushy to make up their mind, just like the food.
