How do you say “yes” in Portuguese without saying “sim”?
Portuguese has a word for yes, but speakers often skip it. The natural answer to a yes/no question is the question’s own verb, handed back: Você quer? — Quero. Você viu? — Vi. Consegue? — Consigo. It is the closest thing Portuguese has to English “I do,” and it lands warmer and more committed than a bare sim, which on its own can sound curt.
The pattern scales: repeat it for emphasis (quero, quero!) or add sim after the verb (quero, sim). It also explains the shape of the negative quero não — the verb echoed, then knocked down. A proposal makes the loveliest example, and the clip ends on one: você aceita casar comigo? answered not with sim but with Quero.
