What is “catupiry”?
Catupiry is a Brazilian creamy cheese brand founded in 1911 in Lambari, Minas Gerais. The brand became so popular that catupiry is now used almost generically in Brazil to mean any soft, mild, slightly tangy cream cheese. Its most iconic use is on pizza: frango com catupiry (“chicken with catupiry”) is one of Brazil’s signature pizza toppings, found in pizzerias and supermarkets across the country and almost nowhere else in the world.
In this clip, a man complains about a pizza he ordered: “Pô, é de frango com catupiry” (“It’s chicken with catupiry”), then announces it’s so bad he’d rather eat plain bread with egg. The brand is cultural shorthand: mention it and any Brazilian pictures the same warm, gooey topping.
