What does “der Clou” mean in German?
When a German cook says “jetzt kommt der Clou,” they are signalling the clever twist is coming. “Der Clou” — borrowed from French “clou” (nail, centrepiece) in the 19th century — means the highlight, the smart trick, the kicker. It is the moment a story or recipe clicks into place, and the word sounds just foreign enough to give the reveal a little extra flair.
