What does “Gemütlichkeit” mean in German?
Gemütlichkeit is that warm, unhurried glow of candlelight, a good book, and easy time among friends. It names both a feeling and an atmosphere: cosy, relaxed, in no rush, good company all folded into one. English has no single word that catches all of it — “cosiness” covers the warmth but misses the ease and sociability baked in. It comes from Gemüt (heart, mind, mood) plus the suffix -lichkeit.
The everyday adjective is gemütlich — a gemütlicher Abend is a laid-back, cosy evening. Gemüt is cognate with English mood, so the word points at an inner state as much as a setting. A room, a café, or a whole evening can be gemütlich; the noun simply names the quality they all share.
