What’s the German word for potato pancake — Kartoffelpuffer, Reibekuchen, or something else?
The potato pancake in this clip has at least three common names, and which one you reach for gives away where you’re from. Kartoffelpuffer works almost everywhere, especially in the north; in the Rhineland it’s usually Reibekuchen; cross into Bavaria and it becomes Reiberdatschi. All three share the same root, reiben, “to grate” — the one step every version of the recipe has in common.
Zoom in further and the map fragments even more: Westphalia says Reibeplätzchen, Hesse has Erbelkrebbel and Rievesplätzjer, and parts of Franconia use Dotsch or Baggers. It’s a small, tasty window into how much regional vocabulary survives in everyday German, even for something as ordinary as fried grated potato.
