What does “Kondensstreifen” mean in German?
Kondensstreifen is German for contrail — those long white streaks aircraft draw across a blue sky. The compound snaps together Kondens- (condensation, from Latin condensare, “to press together”) and Streifen (stripe or trail). That pairing does exactly what German compounds do best: it names both cause and visual in one noun. Contrary to a widespread myth, Kondensstreifen aren’t leaked fuel — they’re engine-exhaust water vapour that freezes instantly into ice crystals at altitude.
