What does “GLAT” mean in Esperanto?
Marking Pride Month, this creator explains the community she belongs to using Esperanto’s own acronym: GLAT — geja (gay), lesba (lesbian), ambaŭseksema (bisexual), and transgenra (transgender). It’s not a straight borrowing of English “LGBT”: the letters are built from the Esperanto words themselves, which is why they land in a different order.
Speakers may also hear an echo of glata, an existing, unrelated Esperanto adjective meaning “smooth” — whether or not that’s actually why the letters landed in this order. The acronym keeps extending the same way English ones do: groups describe themselves as GLAT+ for a wider range of identities, and a longer form, GLATKI, exists for when even more precision is wanted.
