What does “Esperantujo” mean?
This creator’s own running joke is that his personal “tie day” moved from Friday to Saturday “ĉar en Esperantujo mia festotago estas sabato” — “because in Esperanto-land, my name-day is Saturday.” Esperantujo is built from Esperanto + -ujo, the same suffix once used to name whole countries (Francujo, “France,” literally “French-land”). Since Esperanto has no country of its own, its speakers borrowed the suffix as an affectionate, self-aware joke — the “nation” of everyone who speaks it.
It’s informal wordplay, not an official term, but it’s a genuinely common one — heard for anything from a local Esperanto meetup to the whole worldwide community. The literal, unjoking job of -ujo survives too, mostly on containers: sukerujo (“sugar bowl,” from sukero, sugar) or monujo (“wallet,” from mono, money).
