What does “lieveheersbeestje” mean in Dutch?

Lieveheersbeestje literally means “dear Lord’s little animal” — lieve Heer is an old name for God, and beestje is “little critter.” Dutch folk belief once held the insect was sent by God (or, earlier, the Virgin Mary) to protect crops, which is why its name is a small prayer rather than a description. English does the same trick with “ladybird” and “ladybug,” both shortened from “Our Lady’s bird.”

The name traces to freyafugle, an old Germanic term (“Freya’s bird”), Christianized over time by swapping the pagan goddess for the Virgin Mary and then the more general “dear Lord.” German kept the Marian version outright: Marienkäfer, “Mary’s beetle.” The tradition runs deeper than the name: the red, five-spotted Coccinella quinquepunctata was said to carry the five wounds of Christ, part of why the insect was treated as sacred and left alone by farmers rather than killed as a pest.
