When do Dutch speakers use “u” vs “jij”?
Dutch has two ways to say “you,” and the choice tells everyone in the room how comfortable you are. U is formal: strangers, older people, customer-facing roles, your boss’s boss, the surgeon, the king. Jij (or je) is everyone else: friends, kids, anyone you’ve ordered drinks with. The line moves: in 1960 a teenager called their parents u; today, jij is normal. The Belgian Dutch line moves slower, u holds firmer in Flanders.
