What is a “winterdip” in the Netherlands?
A winterdip is the standard Dutch term for the seasonal slump that hits between November and February. Dip on its own means a low or downturn (also used in prijsdip, “price dip”). Combined with winter, it points at the everyday version of seasonal affective disorder: the energy drop, the wanting-to-stay-in-bed, the dim weeks where it’s dark by 4:30pm. There’s a sister term, herfstdip (“autumn dip”), for the September-to-November lead-in.
This product ad opens with “hoor jij bij die 90 procent die last heeft van een herfst en een winterdip?” (“are you part of the 90% who suffer from an autumn or winter dip?”). The 90% claim is ad copy; the word itself is everyday Dutch.
