What does “molenaar” mean in Dutch?
Molen means mill. Add the suffix -aar — the Dutch agent-noun ending that names the person who does a job — and you get molenaar: the one who runs the mill. That same suffix built the word for teacher (leraar), winner (winnaar), artist (kunstenaar), and trader (handelaar). Spot the pattern once and you can guess dozens of Dutch occupational nouns on sight.
The suffix -aar is an unstressed-syllable variant of the more common -er, and both trace back to Latin -ārius. Dutch uses them interchangeably by phonological rule: werk → werker (worker), but molen** → *molenaar*, because the base already ends in an unstressed syllable.
