What does “dubbelganger” mean in Dutch?
A dubbelganger is built from two plain Dutch words: dubbel (double) + ganger (one who goes/walks) — literally, a double-walker. Dutch, German, and English all use a form of this compound for an eerie look-alike or stand-in. The international word comes from German Doppelgänger; Dutch dubbelganger is the parallel native form, which makes it easy to decode on sight.
The German author Jean Paul coined “Doppelgänger” in his 1796 novel Siebenkäs; English borrowed it from German by the 1830s — Sir Walter Scott used “double-ganger” in his Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft (1830). Dutch built its own dubbelganger from the same Germanic parts rather than taking it from English. In the clip, a boy wishes for a dubbelganger — “een soort tweelingbroer, eentje die alles voor me doet” (a kind of twin brother, one who does everything for him). The word’s transparent anatomy makes the wish instantly vivid: a second you, set loose to walk in your place.
