What does “gietijzer” mean in Dutch?
Gietijzer means cast iron — but the word itself shows you the manufacturing process. Gieten means “to pour” or “to cast,” and ijzer means “iron.” Put them together and you get “poured iron”: the metal that is melted and poured into a mould to harden into shape. That verb-plus-material pattern is one of Dutch’s most productive building blocks for naming materials and processes.
In the story, Hendrik walks past an old lamp post on the Lindegracht in Amsterdam — een zware gietijzeren paal, a heavy cast-iron post, dark with rust and long forgotten by the city. The drama is that a tiny tree has pushed green leaves through a crack in that same rusted iron. Dutch extends the pattern freely: smeedijzer (wrought iron, from smeden, to forge), gietstaal (cast steel), gietijzeren as the adjective. Once you hear gieten you can decode the whole family on sight.
