What does “kerngezin” mean in Dutch?
Kerngezin is the Dutch word for the nuclear family, built from kern (“core, nucleus”) and gezin (“household with children”). Note that the second half is not familie. Dutch carefully distinguishes gezin (parents + kids living together) from familie (the wider relatives), and only gezin takes the kerngezin prefix.
The clip pulls the official Rijksoverheid definition of gezin (deliberately broad, “one or more adults caring for one or more children”) and contrasts it with what Google actually shows: a man, a woman, two kids, ideally one boy and one girl. The mismatch is the whole rant. Kerngezin is the cultural default Dutch policy still quietly assumes.
