What does “een schoen zetten” mean in Dutch?
In the Netherlands and Flanders, kids don’t hang stockings. They put out a shoe. The phrase een schoen zetten (“to put out a shoe”) is the Dutch equivalent of the American Christmas-Eve stocking ritual, but it happens for Sinterklaas night on December 5th. Children leave a shoe near the chimney or door with a carrot for Sinterklaas’s horse, and overnight Sinterklaas’s helpers fill it with gifts and small chocolates.
When this clip says “je mag je schoen niet zetten” (“you can’t put out your shoe”), it’s a major Dutch childhood threat: the equivalent of “no presents for you.” The Sinterklaas tradition predates and operates separately from Christmas in the Low Countries.
