What does “kopstoot” mean in Dutch?
A kopstoot is the Dutch word for a headbutt, a transparent compound of kop (head) and stoot (strike). The word covers any forehead-to-face strike, but for Dutch and Flemish speakers it’s permanently associated with one sports moment: Zinedine Zidane’s kopstoot against Marco Materazzi in extra time of the 2006 World Cup final, in Berlin. The headbutt got Zidane red-carded, France lost the final to Italy on penalties, and the moment became one of the most-referenced football memories across European TV trivia.
