What does “bakken in de zon” mean in Dutch?

Bakken in de zon is the colloquial Dutch way to say “sunbathing” — and the metaphor is identical to English “baking.” The verb bakken means to bake or fry, so the phrase conjures the image of a body slowly cooking under the sun. It sounds casual and vivid, which is exactly why a dermatologist reaches for it here before flipping the register entirely: a tan, she explains, means your cells are already damaged.

In the clip, the speaker opens with “bakken in de zon is weer populair” (“sunbathing is popular again”), using the phrase the way any Dutch speaker would in casual conversation.
